A. MAYLEHAM COMPANY
He was only eight years old when he saw the Italians taking Degnaba’s year-round spring water. Some years ago, Mr. Asmerom Russom who has a residency in Sweden wanted to establish a company in Eritrea. “Of course it is obvious that as an Eritrean I had never dreamt of owning a company of my own in another country?said Mr. Asmerom Russom, owner of Maylaham Company.
Then one day Mr. Asmerom remembered, the scene from his childhood, the natural water of Degnaba, which the Italians have established before sixty years, came to his mind. That was the day that he decided to establish a water treatment and water purification company in Maynefhie, six kilometers away from Degnaba, he continued.
In the year 2000, Mr. Asmerom has started the process of establishing his company, from getting access to the land up to setting the plant. The company started to be operational in September 2003 with a capital of Nfa twelve million. Maylaham Company has started producing one liter and one liter and a half bottles of purified water to the market. At this time, the company produces 9,000 liters per day of which about 4,000 liters is sold in the market.
In regard to the domestically produced bottled water compared to the imported bottled water, Mr. Asmerom said that in terms of price the domestic water is cheaper. That is, they sell one liter for seven Nfa and one and half liters for eight Nfa and fifty cents. Imported water costs six Nfa and fifty cents for half liter, and fifteen Nfa for one and half liters.
B. Shenkella Water Bottling Company.
Mr. Berhane Sereke is another Eritrean who lives in Saudi Arabia. He along with his four colleagues from Saudi Arabia and Canada established the Shenkella Water Bottling Company. The entrepreneurs started the idea of establishing the company back in 1996 but could not start until mid 2001.
When the company opened its doors, it started with a capital of Nfa 500,000 producing treated water of ten and twenty liters. Now the company produces 800 jerry cans of twenty and ten liters per day with a capital of Nfa 3 million. Mr.Berhane Sereke, the acting manager of Shenkella said, “The Company has a capability of producing up to 40,000 liters per day as we have brought updated sophisticated machinery from the USA? Explaining as to why the company is producing a very limited amount at this time, Mr. Berhane answered that production would increase once demand increases.
Mr. Berhane did not hide the fact that the company is facing some problems with its generator, storage and transportation. Mr. Berhane continued by stating that the source of the water is located 52 km away from Asmara in a place called Shenkella in the sub-zoba of Logo Anseba Gash Barka. The company has distribution center not only in Asmara but also in other towns including Keren, Mendefera and Dekemhare.
Finally, in comparing water produced in Eritrea with imported water, Mr. Berhane pointed out that locally produced water is natural, unlike the water, which is seawater from Saudi Arabia. He also indicated that imported water takes many days before it reaches the market where the heat of the containers would have an effect on its freshness.
C. AQUA FRESH COMPANY
Mr. Solomon Bahabla and the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students in Massawa founded the Aqua Fresh Company in 1999. Currently, the capital of the company has reached over Nfa 5 million from its initial capital of Nfa 800,000. Mr. Solomon Bahabla, in explaining the differences between aqua and delta (two of the company’s products), stated aqua is a sodium carbonate product preferred by people who live in hot areas, whereas delta (with batch # & expiration date), a modified version of aqua is preferred by highland inhabitants.
Mr. Solomon further explained that one of the main benefits of his company is not influenced by the increase in the price outside of the market because it has started to produce most of the ingredients of its product. Moreover the company produces de-mineralized water, ultra pure water, lab grade water and coolant water in addition to pure drinking water and pure natural water.
From our observation, people have started to buy purified water at this time more than in the past. But does that mean the tap water is unclean and all these companies produce pure and well-treated water? According to Mr.Gebrakidane Girmatsion, the head of the water supply department, “the water that comes into our homes is biologically treated using chlorine, since most of the large under ground pipeline are renewed, we can say in most parts of Asmara the water is clean.?In regard to the purification and treatment of the water companies, Dr. Kesete Araya the Head of Environment Health said that there are sanitarians in the six Zobas of Eritrea who supervise these companies monthly. Most of the companies have good standards, but those that have poor products are told to upgrade their qualities in accordance to the WHO standard. He further added that there are some companies, which sell distilled water those that lack chemical elements, which can protect us from different kinds of diseases.
